Show Low is the biggest town in this part of the White Mountains, with about 11,700 people. It's where a lot of trips start: it has the most stores, restaurants and services in the area, and it's right on the main route up from the Valley.
If you're coming for the Show Low area, Grumpy Toads Getaway is about 15 minutes east in Lakeside. That's close enough to run into Show Low for groceries or dinner, and far enough into the pines to feel like a cabin trip.

A 100-acre lake at about 6,500 feet with camping, boat rentals and a store that sells bait and fishing licenses. Motors are limited to 10 horsepower.
Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area
An Arizona State Park built around a 149-acre lake. It has year-round camping and paddleboat rentals. Low water has closed the boat ramps to trailered boats recently, so check State Parks for current conditions before you haul anything up.
Why stay in Lakeside instead of town
Show Low is convenient. Lakeside is the cabin experience. From Grumpy Toads you walk to Rainbow Lake, paddle the included kayaks, and finish the night at the fire pit. When you need a store, Show Low is a 15-minute drive.
Early December is a good example. For 2026, the local events calendar lists Pinetop-Lakeside's tree lighting on December 4 and Show Low's Christmas Light Parade on December 5, the same weekend. More in our winter guide.
